The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry in New Delhi, on May 24  Tuesday launched the ‘Swachh Survekshan 2024’ scheme the eighth edition of the annual cleanliness survey — with the name of “Waste to Wealth” for garbage-free cities. Ministry also state that the survey would give priority to the principle of “3Rs” ‘Reduce, Recycle and Reuse’ under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0.

On 25th May Delhi civic body takes the initiative as the eighth edition of Swachh Survekshan in the year 2024 as the ‘waste-to-wealth’ initiative and adopted the parameters for ranking in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan.

The ‘Waste-to-wealth’ concept in Delhi refers to the use of waste material to create replicas of various heritage monuments in parks. Under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0, the survey has given priority to “3Rs” ‘Reduce, Recycle and Reuse’

  • Reduce Reduction of waste generation- Reduce garbage, don’t be wasteful.
  • Reuse:  Reuse products and parts- Use things again and again
  • Recycle: Use of recycled resources- Recycle your resources for reuse

Key features

    • Source Segregation: In SS 2024, additional weightage has been given to source segregation of waste, enhancement of waste processing capacity of cities to match the waste generation, and reduction of waste going to the dumpsites.
    • Plastic Pollution: Indicators have been introduced with additional weightage on emphasizing the need for a phased reduction of plastic, plastic waste processing, encouraging waste to wonderful parks, and zero waste events.
    • Cleanest Wards: The ranking of Wards within the cities is also being promoted through Swachh Survekshan 2024. To participate in the ranking and felicitate the cleanest wards Mayors of the cities are being encouraged the people.
    • Further, this year MoHUA is also promoting the cleaning of back lanes of the residential and commercial areas.

Swachh Survekshan 2024- City Ranking List

Swachh Survekshan in the cities has been an enabler for Mission acceleration. Swachh Survekshan has led to healthy competition among cities to improve their performance on sanitation parameters thereby improving sanitation services delivery to the citizens.

Swachh Survekshan 2024 started in 2016 with only 73 cities with a million-plus population and has grown manifold, with-

  • 434 cities in 2017,
  • 4,203 cities in 2018,
  • 4,237 cities in 2019,
  • 4,242 cities in SS 2020,
  • 4,320 cities in SS 2021, and
  • 4,355 cities in SS 2022
